Veteran actor Viju Khote dies at 77

Mumbai: Well-known actor of Hindi-Marathi films and Vijay Khote who played a memorable role of ‘Kalia’ in ‘Sholay’, died on Monday. Many celebrities from the cine world paid tribute to him.

Khote (77 )’s niece and actress Bhavna Balsawar told that she died in her house at around 6.55 am. He was ill for some time. Many of his organs stopped working. He was also famous for the role of ‘Robert’ in the movie ‘Andaz Apna Apna’.

Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar as the authors of ‘Sholay’ remembered Khote as a ‘beloved person’. Khan said, very sad to hear about his death. We had to face it one day or the other. It is good to know that dialogue (of Sholay film) is still on people’s tongue.

Javed Akhtar’s daughter and filmmaker Zoya Akhtar said, “I saw him in films since childhood.” He was part of Sholay. May his soul rest in peace.

Satish Sah, Sunil Shetty, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Rekha Bhardwaj, and others remembered Khote on social media. Shah wrote on Twitter, a dear friend and famous actor Viju Khote passed away today. May your soul rest in peace.

Rishi Kapoor, who worked with Khote in the film Karz, said, When I was young, I roamed with Khote on a motorcycle. We will miss you. Nene tweeted, Sad to hear about the death of Viju Khote ji.

Actor Ajay Devgan called Khote an institution in itself. Actors Abhishek Bachchan and Boman Irani also mourned the death of Khote, along with many other celebrities in the cine world. Khote was also praised for his performances in films like ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’, ‘Ventilator’ and the TV show ‘Bhashale Handke’.
